It’s only February! One can’t be serious about lawn care, can they? Well, somewhere under that blanket of snow is your lawn. And once that snow has melted and spring has sprung (that day will come sooner than you think), it will be time to get that lawn in tip top shape.
We here at Okotoks real estate believe that a healthy lawn is one of the first things people see when looking at a property. A nicely manicured, green lawn is aesthetically pleasing. Here are some lawn care tips for you to get the greenest, healthiest lawn this side of Calgary.
Aerate, Aerate, Aerate
The moment your lawn is snow free, it is great practice to aerate your lawn. You can rent an aerator or hire a landscaping firm to do this task for you.
Aerating your lawn loosens up the soil allowing water to penetrate further into the ground and irrigate the grass roots. It also breaks up thatch (dead grass that has become matted near the base of your lawn), allowing water, air and nutrients to bypass this layer and seep deeper into the soil.
Reseed, Reseed, Reseed
Once this step has been completed, reseed your lawn. Over-seeding is a great way to repair winter damage and fill in any of those bare patches. The soil should be saturated from snow melt, giving those seeds sufficient water to sprout and give your lawn that lush, full look.
When seeding your lawn there are many different types of grass seeds available. Research which strain is best suited for the climate and growing conditions in your area.
Fertilize, Fertilize, Fertilize
The next step that is important for a healthy lawn is fertilizer. Fertilizer provides your lawn with the nutrients needed to help outgrow those pesky weeds.
When applying fertilizer, use a slow-release fertilizer. Also try to use an organic fertilizer since it is friendlier to the environment. Remember to use a spreader for an even application and always read and follow the instructions provided with the fertilizer you are using. The fertilizer must contain a form of nitrogen as this compound is depleted annually from your lawn.
